The Inklings: Inklings at Oxford →
adriancamm:
Oxford is one of my favourite places in the world.
It is like stepping back in time - from the ancient buildings and grand architecture, Christ Church College, to the feel of an important sense of history and ancient traditions; time seems to slow down.
This visit, among many…

The Oxford list.
hereticnarrative:
G&D’s has great coffee and is open until midnight—later than anywhere else in town! They also serve amazing ice cream, pastries, salads, and bagels. . Coffee Republic is a close second—they close at 8pm or 9, I think, and their coffee is divine. . Terrific (and well-priced!) sandwich places: Greens (2 locations: St Giles, and on New Rd—just off Queens and Cornmarker),...

Offbeat Oxford
If you plan on visiting a fair few colleges, the entrance fee will start adding up, and you could easily save this money to spend in on one of Moo Moo’s amazing milkshakes instead.
Hide your cameras away for a bit before introducing yourself to the college porter as a prospective applicant. You won’t be charged for visiting the college, and will even have a nice prospectus. To be more...

lainwen asked: Thanks for your reply!
Yes, I'm planning a visit, but of only a day from London.
I spent two weeks in Oxford like eight years ago and I loved it, so I thought to show the city to my friends. I've been to London so many times in the past years, but I barely remember Oxford (you know, it's been 8 years, and I was 15), and I'm taking advantage of this summer visit...

daubawayweirdsley asked: In response to lainwen's question, visitors can have access to quite a lot of the Bodleian through guided tours (Divinity School, Duke Humfrey's, possibly the Rad Cam), but you can't just wander around on your own. If you want to actually use the reading rooms and books, though, I think you'd have to make a special application, and I'm not sure how easy it is.
slickynicole asked: Hello :)
I saw your answer to that ask and thought I'd put in my two cents. :)
Non-Oxford students/tourists are not allowed to just walk into the Bodleian (or any of the college libraries) and browse or look at books. The Bod does have some organized tours, but since I was a student I never looked into that any further so I don't know what you have to do...

lainwen asked: Not sure you got my question from yesterday, so I'm sending this again. I know you're not from Oxford but I thought maybe you looked up about this, cause I wasn't able to find it out: I was wondering if even non-students at the Oxford University are admitted to the Bodleian library, and if yes, how?
=)

daubawayweirdsley asked: Some Oxford tips:
-Try to visit all of the colleges while you're there, but my personal favourites are Magdalen, New, and Merton. Visit the cloisters at New!
-It's always worth being polite to the porters if you want to have a look around – pretend to be prospective applicants, and they’re more likely to let you in!

Hostels in Oxford
Since our budget is nonexistent limited, we will stay in hostels during our trip. Is not as comfortable as an hotel but I can tell you is funnier. Well, there are not many hostels in Oxford. After some reasearch, we’ve selected two of them that are both affordable and reasonably good for our needs:
Central Backpackers Oxford 13 Park End St.

Oxford University and Women
Women were not admitted to membership of the University until 1920, although they had been allowed to sit some University examinations and attend lectures for over forty years by that date. It was thanks to individual initiatives, and the pioneering work of the Association for Promoting the Higher Education of Women (AEW) that women’s colleges came to be established in Oxford.
